東京、浅草北部に位置する街、通称「山谷」。かつて肉体労働者の街と呼ばれ、幾多の暴動やドヤ街独特の世界に、近づくことすら憚られるエリアであった。しかし現在、高齢化の波に福祉の街へと姿を変えるも、わずかな報道があるのみで、その現状があまり知られていないのも事実である。最近では外国人旅行者から就活生など、宿を利用する人は多様化している。写真家・新納翔が6年間毎週山谷へ通い、実際に帳場の仕事をしながらが見続けてきた現状を、見たままに素朴な視線で切り取った力作。2011年に北京で開催された個展に合わせてZenFotoGalleryより発売された「山谷」に次ぐ二冊目の写真集。

The area commonly known as San’ya located north of Asakusa, Tokyo.In the past, the area, referred as the town of laborers, had been unapproachable as it was plagued with repeated riots and maintained its distinctive atmosphere of Doyagai (flophouse area).
But now, because of the progress of aging, San’ya has been converted to a welfare-friendly area. However, this change received little attention of the media, resulting that few people know about the actual condition of present-day San’ya.
Recently, users of flophouses in San’ya have become diversified from foreign travelers to student job seekers.
Photographer Sho Niiro had continued to visit San’ya every week for 6 years and to see the current situation around there while working actually as a receptionist in one of the flophouses. “Another Side” is a tour de force based on photos with which he captured various scenes as he saw in those days.This is the second photo-book following “San’ya” which was published from Zen Foto Gallery on the occasion of his solo exhibition in Beijing.

1982年横浜生まれ。 2001年麻布学園卒業。 2002年早稲田大学理工学部応用物理学科入学。 2006年同大中退。2009年GalleryNiepceのメンバーに参加(-2010)。2012年川崎市市民ミュージアムにて写真講座の講師を務める。国内外での個展、グループ展多数参加。
